Betterbed Named WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Postgraduate Scholar

University of Portland cross country standout Tommy Betterbed was named the West Coast Conference Mike Gilleran Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also presented with the WCC Postgraduate Scholarship, league commissioner Jamie Zaninovich announced on Thursday. He is the first student-athlete to earn both distinctions in WCC history.

Kipchumba Runs to All-America Honors

University of Portland sophomore Alfred Kipchumba placed eighth in the 10,000-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday night at Hayward Field. Kipchumba, who extended Portland’s streak to 19 seasons with at least one runner at nationals, crossed the finish line with a time of 29:09.63.

Moore, Bassett Compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas --- Junior Cori Moore and redshirt freshman Jared Bassett competed at the NCAA West Preliminary held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday night. Moore finished 19th overall in the 800-meter semi’s, while Bassett placed 10th in his heat and 26th overall In the 3,000-meter Steeplechase.

Kipchumba Qualifies for Nationals; Moore Advances to Quarterfinals

Sophomore Alfred Kipchumba qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in the men’s 10,000-meter run and junior Cori Moore advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s 800-meter run at the NCAA West Preliminary held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday night. Portland has now had at least one competitor qualify for the NCAA Championships in 19 consecutive seasons.

Four Pilots Prepare for Track Regional

Four University of Portland runners will travel to Austin, Texas for the NCAA West Preliminary Round Track and Field Championships scheduled for May 27-29 at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Alfred Kipchumba (10,000-meter) and Jared Bassett (3,000-meter Steeplechase) will represent the men’s team, while Cori Moore (800-meter) and Sifrash Ademe (10,000-meter) will represent the women’s team.

Men’s Track Has Solid Weekend at Three Meets

The Portland men’s track and field team had a busy weekend as runners competed at the Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif., the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore. and the Pacific Twilight in Forest Grove, Ore. Alfred Kipchumba and Trevor Dunbar ran well in the 5K at the Cardinal Invite against elite competition to highlight the weekend.
