RICHLAND, Wash. – Despite two big wins from senior Megan Sporndli and junior Stephanie Doolittle in No. 2 and No. 4 singles, the Portland Pilots women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Idaho Vandals on Friday afternoon.
“It was a great match,” said head coach Susie Campbell-Gross. “Everyone battled and the team continues to do everything we ask. Regardless of the outcome the improvement will build toward late season wins. We are really proud of this effort today from everyone.”
The result caps an eight-match win streak for the 8-1 Vandals while Portland drops to 2-5 on the season.
Sporndli won the first set 6-3 over Idaho’s Maria Perevoshchikova, then scored a 6-1 win in the second set.
In a similar match, Doolittle overpowered Alexandra Ulesanu in straight sets 6-2 then 6-3.
The Vandals recorded straight sets victories in the other four singles matches and wins in all three doubles matches. Portland was forced to forfeit a spot due to injury.
Up next, Portland hosts Portland State on Friday, Mar. 5 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. First serve is set for 9:00 a.m.
