SEATTLE, Wash. – The Portland Pilots women’s tennis team had a competitive weekend against ranked opponents but suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 48 San Diego State after falling 7-0 to No. 20 Washington. Both matches were played out at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash.
"We are a few adjustments away from having the opportunity to earn victories over ranked teams like this,” said head coach Susie Campbell-Gross. “It is within our reach with continued daily work and stepping over the blue line to apply it to competition.”
Against No. 20 Washington, junior Lacey Pflibsen did some solid work in singles play against the 11th-ranked Venise Chan. Pflibsen pushed Chan to the edge in the first set but fell 7-5 and then 6-3 in the second.
Against No. 48 San Diego State, Pflibsen came up big for the Pilots earning a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 1 singles position against Julia Trunk.
Junior Stephanie Doolittle fought a tough three set loss at the No. 3 singles spot. Meanwhile, freshman Cassie McCloskey took down SDSU’s Olivia Colman at the No. 6 position.
McCloskey teamed up with Doolittle to win at the No. 3 doubles position in a tight 9-8 battle. But it would be the Aztecs who would claim the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
“It was an encouraging second weekend of the season,” said Campbell-Gross.
The Pilots now look ahead to home matches against Montana on Saturday, Feb. 20 and West Coast Conference opponent Santa Clara on Sunday, Feb. 21.
