VALLEJO, Calif. --- Portland freshman Rachael Fischer carded a final round of 76 to earn an 11th-place finish and pace the Pilots at the West Coast Conference Championships, which concluded on Tuesday at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. It’s the first top-15 showing for Fischer, while the four-over 76 is the lowest round of her collegiate career.
Fischer began the final day of the three-round, two-day tourney by firing an even par 36 on the back nine, which were her first nine holes of the day. Her opening nine featured three birdies. She came in with a four-over 40 on her second nine, giving her a total score of 243 on the par 72 course. She was Portland’s top finisher and she was just one stroke shy of placing in the top 10. She also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention
Pepperdine featured the top three individual finishers and easily cruised to the WCC’s team title. The Waves’ score of 906 was 32 strokes better than runner-up San Francisco. In third was Santa Clara (972), and then came Gonzaga (981) and Portland (995) at the five-team conference tourney.
Individual champion Lisa McCloskey fired a final-round 74 to hold off Danielle Kang, her Pepperdine teammate. McCloskey’s nine-over 225 was just two strokes better than Kang, while teammate Jessica Wallace was another stroke back in third.
Fischer’s 76 came on the heels of an 82 and 85 during Monday’s opening rounds. Junior Lisa Okazaki was Portland’s next top finisher. Okazaki sandwiched a second-round 78 with an 82 and an 86 for a total of 246. Behind Okazaki came senior Paige Rachor, who closed with a 78 for final score of 251, freshman Avery Collura (256) and sophomore McKennon O’Rourke (274).
