PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women’s rowing team returns to the Covered Bridge Regatta at Dexter Lake this weekend where they captured the Efficiency Trophy at last year’s event. The Pilots are entered to compete in six events at the regatta on Saturday, beginning with the second eight ‘A” and second eight ‘B’ at 9:40 a.m.
The Covered Bridge Regatta features a full field, which includes crews that the Pilots have already competed against this spring.
“It should be a challenging weekend,” Portland head coach Bill Zack said. “We’ve seen a lot of these teams before, but the team is going to have to have a lot of composure to have continued success because they’re all quality opponents.”
Portland’s varsity eight is scheduled to race at 10 a.m., while the novice four will follow at 10:50 a.m. UP’s first four will race at 1:10 p.m., the second four will go at 1:30 p.m. and the novice eight will conclude the day at 3:00 p.m.
At last year’s Covered Bridge Regatta, the Pilots posted four first-place finishes, twice holding off NCAA Division II power Humboldt State, to claim the team Efficiency Trophy. Portland’s first eight, second eight, novice eight and varsity four each won their event.
“That is also a goal this year,” added Zack. “Familiarity for our returners should be helpful.”
Other crews competing on Saturday include Oregon, Seattle, No. 2 ranked Western Washington (NCAA DII), Humboldt State and Santa Clara.
