Ferrero Posts Victory in Pilots Loss to Saint Mary’s
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Junior Alex Ferrero posted a straight set victory, accounting for the only point in the Pilots first round loss to the Saint Mary’s Gaels Wednesday at the West Coast Conference Championships. The Gaels topped the Pilots 4-1 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Pilots, who entered the tournament as the seventh seeded team, end the season with a 10-12 record. The sixth seeded Gales advance to play the third seeded San Diego Toreros on Thursday, improving to 10-14.
Ferrero’s 6-0, 6-4 victory over Seif El Sherbini in the fourth spot tied the match at 1-1, but the Gaels were already on their way to victory with first set victories in four of the other matches.
The top two matches were left unfinished once Saint Mary’s secured the victory. In the top position, Portland’s Ratan Gill held a 1-0 advantage with Saint Mary’s Jessie Kiuri leading 6-5 in the second set.
Junior Michel Hu Kwo had just completed a 6-3 second set in the second position, which would have forced a third set against Joakim Norstrom.
Portland’s lone senior Jackson Martin finishes the season with a career and team-high 14 wins this year. Martin posted a 40-30 record during his four year career with the Pilots, highlighted by an eight match win streak earlier this year.
