SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland senior first baseman Brian Frattali and senior third baseman Jeff Melby were named to the 2013 All-West Coast Conference First Team, while five Pilots total were honored. Senior catcher/designated hitter Ben Grubb and sophomore second baseman Cody Lenahan each landed all-conference honorable mention, while right-hander Billy Sahlinger was named to the league’s all-freshman team.
San Diego junior third baseman Kris Bryant and Gonzaga junior left-handed pitcher/first baseman Marco Gonzales were named the 2013 WCC Co-Players of the Year. Gonzales’ teammate Tyler Olson was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year, and Bulldogs head coach Mark Machtolf was voted WCC Coach of the Year by his peers. Loyola Marymount senior catcher Colton Plaia was recognized as the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, and BYU outfielder Jacob Hannemann garnered Freshman of the Year accolades. Based on conference play, the awards were voted on by the league’s nine head coaches.
This is the first conference honor for Frattali, who hit .333 during league play, which ranked third on the team and 11th in the WCC. He also tied for the team-high with 11 RBI’s against conference foes, while adding four doubles. He was sparkling in the field, committing just one error in 215 chances for a fielding percentage of .995.
Melby also earns his first conference accolade as he enjoyed a breakout season for the Pilots. He led the team all season in batting, finishing with a .370 average during league play, which ranks fourth in the WCC. He posted a team season-best 15-game hitting streak this spring and he reached base safely in 24 straight games during one stretch. His 11 doubles during conference play were a team-best, he matched Frattali with 11 RBI’s against the rest of the league and his .414 on-base percentage was also a team-high.
Grubb hit .309 during conference play en route to earning his second career league honorable mention (2011). He led the team with five home runs overall and two against league opponents, while not committing a single error in 120 chances. He also knocked in 11 runs to equal Frattali and Melby and he was a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases on the season.
Lenahan was third on the team with a .337 batting average, he totaled five doubles and registered 10 RBI’s during the WCC schedule. He was solid in the field and he scored 12 runs, second only to Grubb’s 18. Lenahan was also second on the team with 16 multi-hit games on the season, which included three games with three hits. This is his first conference accolade.
Sahlinger was inserted into Portland’s weekend rotation early in the year and eventually took over as the team’s Friday starter. He posted two wins against conference opponents and held the opposition to a .247 batting average on the season. His best outing of the year came at BYU on April 11 when he allowed just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings to earn the win and lower his league ERA to 2.87.
