PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots baseball program has added three more recruits as Cooper Hummel (C, Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge HS), Jason Rosen (OF, Honolulu, Hawai’i/Punahou School) and Kevin Wade (RHP/INF, Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills HS) have each signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the team as freshmen next fall. Hummel, Rosen and Wade join previously signed recruits Austin Kelly, Devin Kopas, Davis Tominaga and Dan Whittaker to comprise the incoming 2013 class.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming Cooper, Jason, and Kevin to campus in the fall,” Portland head coach Chris Sperry said. “I like the character and makeup they have developed as prep athletes and their passion and skill will be valued here. Like all incoming players, their ability to adjust to Division I baseball will determine how soon they impact the program, but I have no doubts that they will do so.”
Cooper Hummel is a 5-10 senior catcher for the Pacers who was recently named the Three Rivers League Player of the Year. Also a First-Team All-League Selection, Hummel helped lead the Pacers to the second round of the Oregon 6A State Playoffs. He hit .576 this spring with three home runs, 28 RBI’s, eight doubles and three triples. He also has a game with seven RBI’s, belted a grand slam and allowed just one stolen base all season. A second-team all-league selection as a junior, Hummel has a slugging percentage of .966 and an on-base mark of .688.
“Cooper is very committed, a hustler who has always been able to hit,” said Sperry. “He’s a solid receiver who swings from both sides of the plate, and he has a chance to hit with a little power. He has improved his throwing this spring, which is a tribute to his work ethic and to his coaching at Lakeridge.”
Jason Rosen is a 6-0 outfielder who earned honorable mention all-state honors as a junior. He hit .409 in 2012 while leading Punahou with 10 stolen bases and 16 RBI’s. Rosen also was named Second-Team All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu as a junior and he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored during a key postseason elimination game this spring, his senior season.
“Jason is a talented left-handed hitter who stood out at the Hawai’i showcase I attended last fall,” Sperry said. “In our winter camp, he continued to demonstrate a smooth, compact swing that reminds me of Mark Grace. He’s a solid outfielder and he has an excellent work ethic. Jason follows J.R. Bunda to Portland from the island of Oahu, a connection that we hope to grow in the future.”
Kevin Wade is a 6-4 pitcher/first baseman who was named First-Team All-CIF as a junior in 2011. He was also tabbed the Sea View League MVP that season and landed on the All-Orange County Team before earning all-league first-team honors as a junior in 2012. He helped the Mustangs claim the league title in 2011 and reach the CIF Semifinals in 2012. As a sophomore, he hit .464 at the plate and set a school record for hits in a season with 45. He also went 5-1 on the hill with a 1.24 ERA and finished with three home runs and 31 RBI’s.
His junior season, he tossed a one-hit shutout, while providing the offense with a solo home run during the 1-0 win. As a senior this spring he belted two homers in one game and knocked in eight RBI’s against Palm Desert.
“Kevin is a power bat and he should help us on the mound as well,” said Portland assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Larry Casian. “He’s a competitor on the mound and at the plate and he’s a good all-around player.”
“Kevin has tremendous size and power and he will be a physical presence in our program,” added Sperry. “He has competed at a very high level and was recruited by some big schools. I feel fortunate he is coming our way.”
