FAST, JONES LEAD BRONCOS PAST PILOTS, 64-52
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nathan Fast and Brian Jones combined for 39 points Thursday as Santa Clara beat Portland 64-52 in West Coast Conference basketball action. Fast scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half for the Broncos (10-6/1-0), including five 3-pointers, while Jones came off the bench for the first time in his career, scoring 10 points in the second half.
Portland (6-8/0-1), was led by Troy Collins 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Tim Frost added 14 points. The Pilots were miserable from the field, making just 16-of-54 shot attempts, including a 2-of-19 effort from the 3-point line. Still, after trailing 32-23 with 17:53 left to play, Portland rallied back to tied the game at 35-35, and was behind only 50-45 with 6:40 left.
Fast answered back with his fifth 3-pointer of the second half though, and a 3-pointer from Jones on the next possession pushed Santa Clara's lead back to 10 at 56-46 with 5:37 left, and the Broncos didn't look back.
The Broncos opened the game with a 19-9 lead and led 26-21 at halftime behind reserve center David Emslie's seven points and eight from Jones. Emslie finished with 10 points.
The Pilots stayed in the game on 18-of-22 free throw shooting, but Collins (3-10), Travis Andrews (0-9), and Ryan Jones (3-13), combined to shoot only 18.8% from the field. Portland, however, outrebounded the Broncos 38-36, but the Pilot bench was outscored 33-12.
