About the only thing that could slow 10th ranked Portland down were a pair of 20-minute power outages at Negoesco Stadium. Once the lights returned, UP put on a clinic as six Pilots found the back of the net as they cruised to a 6-0 victory in West Coast Conference play. For USF it was the 2000 season finale. USF’s seniors, defenders Melissa Lentz, Christina Byers, Fiona Macdonald and Brittany Ulrich were finally recognized in a pre-match ceremony delayed for 30 minutes by the first power outage.
Portland (14-3-1; 5-1 WCC) scored early and often against USF (7-11-1; 1-6 WCC). Kylee Barton got things started at 6:52 with her eighth goal of the season and Vanessa Talbot added another at 39:46 in her team-leading 12th goal of the year. Emily Patterson scored at 63:30 and Lauren Mussallem tallied one at 72:06. The Pilots added another pair of late goals in the closing minutes as Betsy Barr scored at 84:18 and Crissy Marti finished off the onslaught at 85:52.
Portland outshot USF 16-2. USF goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes recorded nine saves.
Portland returns to action on Sunday when they square off against Saint Mary’s College in a crucial WCC match, which will go a long way in determining the WCC title and automatic berth in the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
