portland selects 1999-2000 award winners
portland -- The University of Portland athletics staff has selected four student-athletes for year-end Scholar-Athlete and Athlete of the Year awards.
Junior goalkeeper Cheryl Loveless and sophomore shortstop Cory Lunde were named 1999-2000 Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while sophomore tennis player Courtney Perkins and freshman soccer forward Conor Casey were picked as Athletes of the Year.
SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Cheryl Loveless, Jr, Soccer
Colorado Springs, Colorado/Air Academy HS
Graduated cum laude in May with a bachelors degree in chemistry and a 3.75 grade point average. An honorable mention all-West Coast Conference selection, Loveless also won an American Institute of Chemists award. She has been on the deans list seven straight semesters at Portland.
Cory Lunde, So, Baseball
Vancouver, Washington/Hudsons Bay HS
A secondary education major with a 3.92 grade point average, Lunde was a third-team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American, all-Academic District VIII, and a unanimous all-WCC first-team shortstop. Lunde was also the teams MVP after leading the team in hitting.
ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Courtney Perkins, So, Tennis
Port Orchard, Washington/Mt. Rainier HS/University of Maryland
Perkins was Portlands first-ever all-WCC selection and also the schools first-ever nationally ranked player. She finished the season with a 19-4 singles record (school wins record), and ranks fifth on UPs career wins list.
Conor Casey, Fr, Soccer
Denver, Colorado/South HS
Casey led Portland, the WCC and the nation in scoring with 23 goals and seven assists (53 points), was the WCC co-Player of the Year and WCC Freshman of the Year. He was also a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic qualifying team.
