PORTLAND -- University of Portland shortstop Cory Lunde (Vancouver, WA/Hudson’s Bay HS), was named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-America University Division baseball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Lunde was a third-team selection and was one of just three sophomores among the 34 players named on the three teams. A District VIII All-Academic pick, Lunde led Portland with a .351 batting average, and was a unanimous first-team all-West Coast Conference pick.
Portland’s team MVP, Lunde struck out just 18 times in the 2000 season, and ranks seventh in career batting average at Portland (.324). He was recently named the University of Portland’s Male Athlete of the Year in a vote by the school’s head coaches.
Lunde sports a 3.92 grade point average in secondary education, and has already twice been a WCC All-Academic team pick. He joins Ted Sheedy (1988, 3rd team) and Darren Hartman (1997, 3rd team), as the only Academic All-Americans in Portland baseball history.
