Kelly Gray scored in the 78th minute to lift the #17 Portland to a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference men¹s soccer match Sunday afternoon in Mustang Stadium.
Gray (San Jose, CA), a junior forward, broke up the scoreless duel when he headed a long pass from sophomore forward Jarrod Weis (Hillsboro, OR) past Cal Poly sophomore goalie Greg Blevins (Los Gatos) and into the net.
The win improved Portland¹s record to 10-4-1. Cal Poly, which has lost 10 of its last 11 matches, fell to 2-10-1.
The Mustangs mounted few attacks, attempting just six shots. The best Cal Poly scoring opportunity came in the 83rd minute when freshman midfielder Eibad Ghori (Palo Alto, CA) twice had chances inside the penalty box but came away empty-handed.
Portland was credited with 17 shots, including seven by Gray. Portland junior goalkeeper Curtis Spiteri (Vista, CA) had three saves for the
shutout, his fifth of the season.
Blevins had six saves in goal for Cal Poly.
Portland now has a 4-1-1 edge in its series with the Mustangs.
