Portland, Ore. - The Portland Pilots swept the Portland State Vikings in 3 games. The victory gives the Pilots a two-match season sweep of the Vikings for the first time since 1997. The Pilots improve to 5-14 overall. The Vikings, a member of the Big Sky Conference, fall to 4-12 overall and lose their 10th straight match.
The first game of the match the Pilots got off to a 12-0 start, with the Pilots going on to win the game by a score of 30-23. The second game of the match had a similar result with senior outside hitter Bridget DeChant taking charge for the Pilots who through two games had 11 kills on 16 attempts, a .688 percentage. DeChant also 3 assisted blocks through the first two games. The Pilots won the game by a score of 30-22.
In the third game freshman middle blocker Michelle Oakland came up with some big plays for the Pilots. DeChant got her first error of the night after hitting 13 kills on 20 attempts. She ended the night with 18 kills on 29 attempts, 2 assists, 3 aces, 10 digs, and 3 assisted blocks.
Coach Doug Sparks said after the match “it was fun to see us play as well as we played tonight.”Sparks also was impressed with the play of Michelle Oakland. “It was good to see her play as well as she played and to see how good she will be.”
The Pilots resume their West Coast Conference schedule on Friday against Santa Clara and Saturday against San Francisco, both matches to be held at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center in Portland.
