The Portland Pilots lost to the Gonzaga Bulldogs in five games. 19-30, 30-28, 30-24, 23-30, 11-15. The five game match was the final match for both teams in West Coast Conference play. The Bulldogs finish their season with a 9-17 record overall and 5-9 record in WCC play. The Pilots finish the West Coast Conference schedule with a 2-12 record and fall to 6-19 overall with one match to play.
Sophomore setter Sara Engstrom had career highs in both kills and attempts with 11 kills and 32 attempts, her .281 attack percentage fell just short of her season high attack percentage of .294. The Pilots took a two game to one lead after three games, but were unable to hold off the ‘Zags. Junior Nicol Seeley had a career match with a career high 12 digs which blew away her previous high of 3 digs against Marquette earlier this season. Freshman Kendra Mitchell also had a career night with a career highs with seven kills, 21 attempts, one ace, 15 digs, and one assisted block. Another freshman, Michelle Oakland had a career high two solo blocks and a career high five total blocks.
The ‘Zags were led by Abby Cullen who recorded 19 kills on 37 attempts. Kat Chroustovska had 63 assists, three aces and 14 digs for Gonzaga. Senior Shannon O’Conner played her final collegiate match as she had eight kills and a team high attack percentage of .357.
The Pilots will close out their 2001 season on Wednesday in a match against 8th ranked Colorado State. The match will be the final match for seniors Julie Allen, Bridget Beschen, Bridget DeChant and Kristen Edwards. The game will be the first half of a double header at the Chiles Center with the Pilot men’s basketball team taking on Idaho State following the volleyball match.
