Dion Jackson scored six of his eight points in overtime Wednesday, lifting Idaho State (1-1) to a 96-90 overtime win at Portland (1-1).
Alvin Brooks’ 3-pointer just 10 seconds into overtime put ISU up 84-81, and the Pilots couldn’t regain the lead. Portland closed within 92-90 with 24 seconds remaining on a pair of Adam Quick free throws, but a pair of Jackson free throws, followed by a Jackson layup sealed the game.
Portland’s Coky Rochin had a career-high 29 points and added 12 rebounds for his second double-double, and Casey Frandsen added 23 points. Jeremy Brown led the Bengals with 21 points, 16 coming in the second half and overtime. D’Marr Suggs added 19, and Brooks had 16.
After leading 42-39 at halftime, Portland stretched its lead to 60-49 but watched ISU go on a 19-7 run over nearly eight minutes. The two teams traded the lead five times in the final three minutes of the half before ISU took an 81-78 lead at 1:26.
The Pilots held the Bengals scoreless, however, and Rochin’s layup with five seconds left sent the game into overtime.
Portland hit only 26-of-42 free throws in the game, 9-of-16 in the second half alone, and committed 24 turnovers. The Bengals, meanwhile, hit 12-of-29 3-point attempts.
