Casey Frandsen scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the second half Sunday, leading Portland to a 79-74 exhibition win over the Brisbane Capitals. Coky Rochin added 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Pilots.
David Bartholomeaus topped the Capitals with 18 points, and former Oregon Duck Terik Brown had 14 of his 16 points in the second half.
The Pilots led 31-28 at halftime despite shooting just 26.5% from the field, but saw the Capitals come back to take a 38-37 lead with 16:24 left to play before Frandsen hit three free throws. A Ross Jorgusen layup followed by an Adam Quick jumper pushed Portland’s lead to 44-38, and the Capitals couldn’t respond.
Portland was 31-of-38 at the free throw line in the game as Rochin (9-12) and Frandsen (9-9) combined to go 18-of-21. In the second half, the Pilots knocked down 22 of 28 free throws.
Freshman forward Karl Aaker added five points and 12 rebounds for the Pilots, and Eric Knight five points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
