Casey Frandsen’s game-high 23 points Saturday led Portland to a 68-61 win over Eastern Washington. Ghislain Sema added 11 points off the bench for the Pilots (4-4), while Darren Cooper and Jason Humbert each had 13 for the Eagles (5-5).
Portland led 36-31 at halftime and opened up a 42-32 lead early in the second half, but Eastern ripped off an 14-4 run to knot the game at 46-46 with 8:20 left. A pair of Frandsen free throws, a Sema layup and a jumper from Adam Quick pushed Portland back to a 52-46 lead in less than a minute.
The Pilots kept the lead between six and nine points until Cooper hit a 3-pointer at 1:01 to bring the Eagles within 62-59, but Ross Jorgusen scored four of his 13 points in the final 31 seconds on a jumper and two free throws. A pair of Frandsen free throws with 11 seconds left provided the final score.
Frandsen was 10-of-10 at the free throw line and 6-of-12 from the field, and tied career highs with five rebounds and four assists. On a night when Coky Rochin was limited to six points and six rebounds, Sema was outstanding, knocking down 5-of-5 field goals - three on dunks - to go with five rebounds and a block.
Portland shot 54.8% from the field, just the second time this season the Pilots have topped the 50% plateau, and outrebounded the Eagles 29-26. Still, the Pilots had to overcome 23 turnovers and foul trouble to virtually the entire roster.
