Christine Sinclair and Betsy Barr each scored two goals Sunday as Portland (20-3-0) defeated Texas A&M (17-4-1) 4-1 to advance to next weekend’s NCAA Women’s College Cup semifinals. Portland will face North Carolina in a rematch of a 1998 semifinal.
Portland will be making its sixth trip to college soccer’s final four in the last eight years, and second consecutive appearance after losing to UCLA 1-0 in the 2000 College cup semifinals.
Sunday, Portland rallied from an early 1-0 deficit, scoring four unanswered goals. After Linsey Johnson put Texas A&M ahead 1-0 in just the eighth minute, Portland picked up a tying goal from Sinclair less than seven minutes later.
Just 11 minutes into the second half, Kristen Moore’s cross to the right of the goal was headed into the near post by Barr for the eventual game-winning goal. Ten minutes later, Portland went ahead 3-1 when Erin Misaki’s through ball into space found Sinclair streaking alone to the goal. The Canadian freshman then beat Texas A&M’s keeper with a slotted shot to the left near post.
The Pilots iced the game at 71:50 when Kristen Rogers’ cross was laid down perfectly in the box for Barr, who knocked in her second goal of the game.
Texas A&M, which was the first team to score on Portland in the playoffs, kept Pilots keeper Cristin Shea busy all afternoon, as Shea had to make six saves, several of them leaping to push shots over the crossbar.
Portland outshot the Aggies 15-11 in the game, and had an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
