HONOLULU – Portland’s rally from a 13-point deficit ran out of time Wednesday, resulting in a 75-68 loss at Hawaii in the first round of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic. The Pilots will face Holy Cross on Friday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. in the loser’s bracket of the tourney.
Wednesday, Portland whittled Hawaii’s 57-44 lead down to just four points with 1:30 left to play, but couldn’t convert on four possessions while the Rainbow Warriors made only 3-of-7 free throws in the final 90 seconds.
Adam Quick’s 17 points and five assists led Portland (4-5), while Coky Rochin added 12 points and six rebounds. Karl Aaker, Casey Frandsen and Eric Knight each scored nine points for the Pilots.
Predrag Savovic led all scorers with 24 points for Hawaii (7-2), while Mike McIntyre came off the bench for 14 points. Phil Martin added 12 points and 10 rebounds, all 12 points coming in the first half.
After knocking a 13-point Hawaii edge in the first half down to a 41-36 halftime score, the Pilots watched Hawaii bound out to a 55-42 lead less than five minutes into the second half. The Rainbow Warriors kept the Pilots at bay for the next seven minutes, finally resting on a 69-61 lead with 3:27 remaining before Portland started its rally.
Eric Knight hit a jumper, and after a Savovic free throw, Frandsen hit a jumper to bring Portland within five, 70-65. McIntyre then answered with a jumper to push the lead back to seven, before Quick knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game as Portland closed within 72-68 at 1:30.
A trio of 3-point attempts failed to drop for the Pilots on their next three possessions, while Hawaii was struggling at the free throw line.
Hawaii outrebounded Portland 42-27, including 18 offensive rebounds, but the Pilots turned the ball over just 12 times.
