Corvallis, Ore. - The Portland Pilots continued their unbeaten season with a road victory over the Oregon State Beavers 67-66. With clutch shooting by sophomore Khalila O’Rielly-Williams the Pilots were able to hold off the Beavers. The Pilots improved their school best start and are now 6-0 on the season, the Beavers are now 3-4 after the loss.
The score at half time was 27-29 with OSU taking the lead at the break. Guard Da’Love Woods led the Pilots at the break with seven points on 3-4 shooting in the first half. The Beavers were led by Felicia Ragland wo had nine points on 4-8 shooting.
The second half turned into a shootout with Ragland scoring a career high 37 points in the game on 14-25 shooting. Woods was up to the test though, and ended the game with a season high 20 points on 7-11 shooting. The Beavers had several six point leads throughout the second half, with the latest coming with 4:43 remaining in the game. The Pilots were resiliant though A three point shot by Ashlee Giles brought the Pilots to within three. O’Rielly-Williams made a layup to make it a one point game 63-62. Each team added a free throw to make it 64-63 Beavers with 1:16 remaining in the game.
O’Rielly-Williams made a baseline jumper with 29 seconds remaining to put the Pilots on top 65-64. With nine seconds remaining the Beavers lost Ragland who went out with an injury and would not return. Hanna Seltzer missed the front end of a one and one for the Pilots, but O’Rielly-Williams came up with the rebound and was immediately fouled by Ragland’s replacement, Jessica Jones. She made both free throws giving the Pilots a three point lead. Missing their leading scorer and best shooter Ragland, the Beavers looked to Leilani Estavan to tie the game. She made the shot with two seconds remaining, but it was ruled that she had her foot on the line clinching the win for the Pilots.
The Pilots will look to sweep the state of Oregon on Saturday when they take on the Portland State Vikings at the Rose Garden at 10:30 a.m.
