The Portland Pilots lost in overtime for the second time this season, this time it was on a pull up jumper by Kevin Mitchell with 2.5 seconds left to give the Texas-Pan American Broncs the 82-80 victory over the Pilots. The Broncs were led by freshman Eric Montalvo who shot 6-6 from three-point range for the game with all of them coming after the half. The Pilots fall to 3-3 on the season while the Broncs improve to 5-2.
The first half was back and forth with neither team taking more than a four point lead until the midway point of the first half when Mire Chatman made a jumper with 9:30 to play in the first half. The Pilots fought back with five steals in the final 2:52 and a pair of threes from Karl Aaker gave the Pilots the halftime lead 34-32.
The Pilots opened up the second half building a five point lead off of Adam Quick’s fastbreak layup from a Ross Jorgusen steal just over two minutes into the second half. Montalvo broke a 48-48 tie with his first 3-pointer of the night, giving the Broncs a 51-48 lead with just over eight minutes in regulation. He made three more from beyond the arc before the end of regulation. In overtime the Pilots opened up a three point lead but Montalvo was there with an answer with his fifth straight 3-pointer. The Pilots earned another three point lead with a layup by Patrick Galos with 55 seconds remaining. Montalvo would not be stopped however making his sixth straight three with 38 seconds left. A turnover by Coky Rochin with 22 seconds left gave the ball back to the Broncs for one last shot and Kevin Mitchell hit it with 2.5 seconds remaining and that was all it took.
The Pilots had all five starters score in double digits with Rochin scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double. Casey Frandsen got 13 points for the Pilots while Jorgusen and Aaker earned 12 apiece. Aaker shot 4-5 from beyond the arc.
