The Pilots lost to the Portland State Vikings in overtime 77-75. The Pilots fall to 3-4 with the loss. Casey Frandsen led the Pilots with a career high 33 points on 9-15 shooting. The Vikings improve to 3-3 this season.
The Vikings had an 11 point lead nine minutes into the game, after the Pilots cut the lead to one the lead was never more than five points in the half and the teams went into the break tied at 37 apiece. The Vikings shot over 50% from the field in the first half while the Pilots shot 37% in the opening half. Frandsen was 4-5 from the field including 2-2 from beyond the arc in the first half giving him 13 points to open the game. Ross Jorgusen was right behind him with 4-6 shooting and 2-4 beyond the arc, Jorgusen had 10 points in the opening half. The opening half came to a close with the Pilots tying the game on Coky Rochin’s full length pass to Frandsen for a buzzer beating layup.
The Vikings led for most of the second half with the Pilots taking their first lead of the half with just under eight minutes remaining. A 3-pointer by Frandsen put the Pilots ahead 67-65 with 1:40 left in regulation. Jorgusen picked up his third foul of the game sending Seamus Boxley to the line for a pair of free throws. Boxley connected on both shots tying the game at 67. The Pilots would rely on Frandsen to try to win the game for them, and he jumper in the lane with four seconds remaining. The Vikings were not going to quit, with Kevin Briggs making his own jumper in the lane as time expired to send it to overtime.
In overtime, it was Seamus Boxley against Casey Frandsen as both players scored all of their team’s points in the extra session. The game winning shot came from Boxley who scored with six seconds remaining. Frandsen and the Pilots were unable to answer with Frandsen unable to get a shot off as time expired.
Kevin Briggs had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for Portland State. Frandsen’s career night included his 33 points, four offensive rebounds, four steals, and two asssists. Coky Rochin had a game high 11 rebounds for the afternoon.
The Vikings swept the doubleheader with the Portland State women’s team winning the opening game. The 3-4 Pilots will take the week off for finals and resume Saturday with a game against Eastern Washington in the Chiles Center at 7:00 p.m.
