The Portland Pilots were upset by the Portland State Vikings 72-83. The Pilots were undefeated going into the game hosted by the Vikings at the Rose Garden in Portland. The Pilots had two players score 20 or more points and grabbed over 10 rebounds, but it would not be enough to stop the sharp-shooting of Nikki Petticrew for the Vikings.
The Pilots took a lead early and it looked like they would have no problems with the Vikings.The Pilots led by 11 points six minutes into the game. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams scored 10 points for the Pilots in the first six minutes alone. The Vikings staged a rally though to take the lead with .... left in the first half. The Vikings took a 40-37 lead into the lockerroom. Petticrew had 12 points on 5-7 shooting for the Vikings in the first half. She ended the game scoring 19 points on 8-11 shooting including 3-6 from beyond the arc.
The Vikings opened up a seven point lead three minutes into the second half. The Pilots would fight back to take a one point lead with just under seven minutes left in the game. With the game tied with just over five minutes remaining the Vikings took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Krishelle Jessee. That was as close as it would get with the Pilots sending the Vikings to the line five times in the final two minutes in effort to get back into the game.
The Pilots were led by Khalila O’Rielly-Williams who had a double-double with 20 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Senior Tami Standish also had a double-double with 24 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and one steal. Guard Da’Love Woods had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Pilots.
The Vikings were led by a pair of scorers with 19 points. Nikki Petticrew had 19 points along with Niki Sadowski. The Vikings shot 49.1% from the floor for the game, while the Pilots shot only 37.8% from the field.
The Pilots, who drop to 6-1, will play next Saturday at the University of Pacific. The Vikings improve to 4-4 on the season.
