Kelly Gray, Josh Simpson and Brandon Henley each scored two goals Friday as Portland (4-3-0) won 9-2 over previously undefeated and 19th-ranked Air Force (5-1-0) in the first round of the NIKE Husky Classic in Seattle.
Nate Jaqua, Eric Cronkrite and Kyle Tanner also scored for the Pilots, which had their highest goal output in 14 seasons. Portland beat Seattle University 10-0 in the 1987 season, the last time a Pilot team scored more than eight goals.
The Pilots led 4-0 at halftime, with Gray collecting his two goals just over two minutes apart, giving Portland a 3-0 lead. Josh Simpson then added a goal for the halftime edge.
Just 58 seconds into the second half, Jaqua made the score 5-0 before Air Force scored at 51:55. Simpson notched his second goal at 58:42 before Air Force closed within 5-2 at 62:35.
Kyle Tanner's first career goal, a header off an Eric Cronkrite corner pushed the lead to 6-2, then the Pilots finished off the Falcons with a Henley goal at 77:32. Cronkrite followed four seconds later with a 50-foot shot into an open net.
Jaqua and Cronkrite each had a goal and three assists, while Gray had two goals and an assist. The Pilots peppered Air Force with 26 shots, tying for seventh on the single-game record list.
Justin Carter, making his first career start in goal with Curtis Spiteri sitting out the game due to a red card against Evansville, made four saves for his first career win.
Portland faces UNLV Sunday at 11 a.m. The Rebels lost 2-0 to host Washington Friday night.
