Lawrence, KS -- The University of Portland women’s volleyball team won its second match in the Kansas Hampton Inn Invitational Friday afternoon, defeating Georgia Southern in three games, 30-22, 30-25 and 30-26. With the victory, the Pilots improved their record to 2-3 on the season.
Once again senior outside hitter Bridget DeChant performed well for Portland with nine kills in 17 attempts for a .471 hitting percentage. DeChant also had two service aces. Junior middle blocker Anna Abatzoglou netted 15 kills in 30 attempts for a .222 hitting percentage. Senior setter Julie Allen recorded 16 assists and 12 digs while fellow setter Sara Engstrom had 27 assists.
Head Coach Doug Sparks said it was Portland’s best-played match since he has been head coach. He said the Pilots will have their hands full against Kansas tomorrow, but if they play like they did against the Eagles they have a good chance of winning.
