Lawrence, KS -- After winning the first two games of the Kansas Hampton Inn Invitational, the University of Portland fell in three games to host Kansas, 19-30, 15-30 and 23-30. The Pilots dropped to 2-4 on the season while the Jayhawks improved to a perfect 8-0.
Despite netting only three kills with a negative hitting percentage against Kansas, Portland senior outside hitter Bridget DeChant was named to the All-Tournament team, the only Pilot player to receive the honor. Jayhawk setter Molly Lamere was named tournament MVP and teammate Sarah Rome was also named to the all-tourney team. In the match against the Pilots Lamere had three kills, 32 assists, 11 digs and one service ace.
Sophomore middle blocker Heather Denison performed well in the loss with eight kills for a .143 hitting percentage and three block assists. Transfer setter Kuulei Kamanao hit .500 with one kill and 10 digs.
After two weekends on the road the Pilots will return to the friendly confines of the Chiles Center to host the 2001 Portland Pilot Preview against Chicago State, Binghamton and cross-river rival Portland State.
