LOS ANGELES – Greg Lakey scored eight of his 14 points Friday in the final 3:05 as LMU outscored Portland 12-4 in that span for an 85-77 WCC win. The loss – Portland’s ninth straight – dropped the Pilots to 4-13 overall, 0-3 in WCC games, while LMU improved to 9-8/2-1.
Portland’s Casey Frandsen led all scorers with 16 points, while Ross Jorgusen and Adam Quick added 14 points. Coky Rochin added 11 points and seven rebounds, snapping a string of seven straight double-doubles.
The Pilots led 55-44 with 15:35 left to play after Frandsen canned a 3-pointer, then scrambled to hold onto the lead as the Lions made a charge. Portland managed to keep the edge, leading 67-66 after a pair of Quick free throws, but LMU tied the game four times in the next three minutes.
With the score tied 73-73 and 3:05 left, Portland had turnovers on three straight possessions, and LMU responded by taking a 78-73 lead. A Frandsen jumper brought the Pilots within 79-75, but Lakey scored on a fast-break dunk and then added a pair of free throws to seal the game.
The Pilots had raced out to a 41-34 halftime lead in holding LMU to 32% shooting from the field. Quick notched 12 points in the first 20 minutes, while Ghislain Sema and Eric Knight added five points each off the bench.
Portland was only 11-of-26 from the field in the second half, though, while LMU made 54% of its second-half attempts and made 18-of-24 free throws in the game.
