Junior forward Jimmy Miggins scored a team-high total of 17 points and collected eight rebounds as seven players registered double-figure scoring totals Saturday night helping Pepperdine race past Portland by a final score of 109-88 in a West Coast Conference (WCC) game played at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Senior guard Craig Lewis and sophomore forward Glen McGowan each scored 15 points as Pepperdine won its sixth consecutive game and improved to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in WCC play.
Junior forward Boomer Brazzle and freshman guard Terrance Johnson each scored 14 points for Pepperdine. Junior guard Devin Montgomery tossed in 11 points and handed out five assists, while junior guard Gary Colbert added an important spark down the stretch with 10 points and three assists.
Portland, 4-14 overall and 0-4 in WCC action, was led by senior forward Coky Rochin with 20 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Ross Jorgusen tossed in 18 points and handed out five assists, while sophomore forward Casey Frandsen also scored 18 points for the Pilots.
Pepperdine scored the first eight points of the game, and led by as many as 13 points early in the ballgame. But the pesky Pilots made nine three-point baskets in the first half and only trailed by a 50-43 margin at halftime.
A basket by McGowan at the 12:00 mark gave Pepperdine a 71-60 lead, but Portland answered with a 10-2 scoring run to pull within a 73-70 count following a three-point basket by freshman guard Porter Troupe with 10:12 left.
The Pilots could not draw any closer, and from that point on it was all Pepperdine.
The Waves shot a blistering 61.0 percent from the field (36-of-59) and limited Portland to a 40.0 percent shooting mark (26-of-65). Pepperdine held a 41-27 rebounding advantage.
