Portland needed every bit of a record-setting night at the free throw line Thursday, and beat Saint Mary’s (5-13/0-5) 74-68 to halt a 10-game winless streak. The Pilots improved to 5-14 overall, 1-4 in West Coast Conference games.
The Pilots made 21-of-22 free throws in the contest (95.5%), breaking the previous Chiles Center mark of 93.3% (28-30), set in 1989 against Puget Sound. Only Adam Quick’s miss inside the final minute prevented Portland from tying the team record (11-11, vs. Santa Clara in 1993).
Quick led Portland with 18 points, while Casey Frandsen added 16, Ross Jorgusen 15, and Coky Rochin had his 12th double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chase Poole had 18 points to lead Saint Mary’s, while Paul Marigney added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Ethnie Stubbs had 16 points off the bench.
Portland led 63-51 with 6:14 left in the game after leading by as many as 15, but Saint Mary’s outscored the Pilots 8-0 to close within 63-59 at 2:01. The Gaels then went scoreless over the next 1:16 as Portland nudged ahead 68-59.
An SMC 3-pointer cut the Portland lead back to six points, but consecutive length-of-court passes from Patrick Galos to Frandsen resulted in a layup and dunk, matching Saint Mary’s scores.
Portland led the entire game except for 2-0 and 4-3 Gaels leads in the opening minutes. The game was just 23-19 at 7:22 left in the first half when freshman walk-on Brian Jochim keyed a 13-3 Portland run with five of his career-high seven points. Jochim hit a jumper and a 3-pointer in the run.
The Pilots finished the game at 51.1% from the field and hit 7-of-13 3-point attempts, but committed 17 turnovers and were outrebounded 34-24. The Gaels managed to shoot just 39% from the field.
