Senior Peter Malacek rebounded from a first round defeat to Pepperdine’s Diego Acuna, winning two matches in the consolation draw against Pepe Mendoza of TCU and Gwinyai Chingoka of SMU, before falling to Khalid El Drorry of Texas A&M on Sat., Oct. 19.
The tournament featured a 32 draw which included players from some of the top schools in the country including USC, UCLA, Illinois, Arizona and North Carolina.
“The tournament features as tough of a draw as you will find in college tennis,” said Head Coach Aaron Gross. “It was great preparation for Peter before heading to the ITA West Regional Tournament next weekend at Saint Mary’s. Peter has been playing very well. I think he is capable of beating anyone in the draw. There are quite a few players who are also very capable of beating him, but he is going to show that he is one of the top players in the country this fall by playing very tough competition week in and week out. We are looking for big things from Peter this season.”
Malacek, Quinn Borchard, and Ram Hernandez will travel to Moraga, CA, on Oct. 25-27 to compete in the ITA West Regional competition.
