Reserve forward Megan Woods scored two goals Sunday as #18 Pepperdine halted #2 Portland’s 12-match home unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win in West Coast Conference women’s soccer play. Pepperdine improved to 12-1-2, 2-1-0 in WCC play, while Portland slipped to 12-3-1, 2-1-0 in WCC games.
While Portland outshot Pepperdine 13-5 and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks, Pepperdine’s two goals in the second half were the result of defensive sluggishness by the Pilots. Woods tallied in the 52nd minute, taking a quick restart down the left side before beating Portland keeper Lauren Arase to the far post from 12 yards out.
The second Woods goal - 17 minutes later - came after Lacey Ubaldi’s through ball got Woods free and drew Arase off her line. After beating two Portland defenders to the ball, Woods slotted the 14-yard shot under the rushing Arase.
The Pilots managed eight shots in the final 22 minutes but only forced Pepperdine freshman keeper Anna Picarelli to make two routine saves.
Christine Sinclair nearly put Portland ahead in the 14th minute, but her header off a Lindsey Huie corner kick hit the crossbar.
Portland, which had recorded an 11-0-1 record since starting the season with losses at Utah and BYU, lost to Pepperdine for just the second time in the series history - and the first time in Portland.
