Christine Sinclair had a pair of goals Saturday and Wanda Rozwadowska added a goal and an assist, as #4 Portland beat #12 Washington 4-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action. Portland (9-2-1) outshot Washington (5-4-2) 21-6 and allowed only two Husky shots on goal.
Portland goalkeepers Lauren Arase and Kim Head combined for the shutout, with Head playing the final 6:35 in her first career action. Arase made two rather pedestrian saves.
After Rozwadowska’s initial cross attempt was blocked in the 13th minute, the Canadian junior tracked the ball down near the endline, and centered a second ball directly to the head of Sinclair for a 4-yard nod past Washington keeper Hope Solo.
Sinclair then put Portland ahead 2-0 in the 26th minute when Kristen Moore sent a ball over the top of the Washington defense. Sinclair won a foot race to the ball, drawing Solo off her line. Sinclair was able to slot a 12-yard grounder to the left of the on-rushing Solo into an open net.
Less than five minutes later, Kristen Rogers’ cross from the right was centered by Emily Patterson to Rozwadowska for an easy tap-in, giving Portland a 3-0 lead with 15 minutes left to play in the first half.
Freshman forward Rebekah Patrick capped the win in the 84th minute with a determined solo effort which covered some 35 yards. Taking the ball just below the center circle, Patrick weaved her way through much of the Washington defense, then fired a rocket at Solo. The Washington keeper managed to deflect the shot, but Patrick pounced on the bouncing ball and scored the rebound.
Portland hosts Oregon Sunday at noon in the final non-conference game of the season.
