Portland’s defense held Oregon to just two shots on goal Sunday, and the Pilots won 3-0 in a game decided early in the first half. Portland (10-2-1) outshot Oregon (1-7-1) by a 19-4 count, and played keep-away for much of the game.
Lindsey Huie’s cross just inside the box to Emily Patterson was calmly finished, as Patterson stopped the ball and deliberately drilled a 12-yard laser to the near post, putting Portland ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute. The Pilots pushed the score to 2-0 just 1:40 into the second half when Kristen Rogers recovered a loose ball to the right of the goal, then lifted her shot into an open net after the Oregon keeper had come out to snuff a previous play.
Christine Sinclair and Erin Misaki teamed up for Portland’s final score in the 52nd minute when Misaki’s nifty through ball found Sinclair with just one defender to beat at the top of the box. Easily winning the ball, Sinclair then slotted her shot to the far post from 10 yards.
Portland had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks, and Lauren Arase had to make only two recreational saves for the Pilots. Reserve keeper Kim Head played the final 19 minutes to share the shutout with Arase.
