Senior guard Ashlee Giles lit up the court with 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and zero turnovers, leading Portland past the Western Oregon Wolves, 70-51 on Monday night at the Chiles Center.
Giles, who shot 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line in 26 minutes, had plenty of help from the Pilot bench. Freshman guard Whitney Grant notched 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc and 1-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line as a starter. Amy Botto and Hanna Seltzer each tallied 10 points for Portland. Botto totaled eight boards and one blocked shot in just 18 minutes. Veteran Khalila O’Rielly-Williams added eight points and eight rebounds. O’Rielly-Williams left the game early in the second half with a nose bleed, but was able to return late in the game.
Portland fell behind 28-23 with :26 to play in the first half before outscoring Western Oregon 47-23 to end the second half. The Pilots scored just six points off turnovers in the first half, while the Wolves tallied 12 points in the paint and 10 points off Pilot turnovers.
After trailing 28-23 at halftime, the Pilots pushed the lead to 10 points with a run midway through the second half. Over a four-minute span, Seltzer connected on a three-pointer, Dalgleish made two free-throws, Cecily O’Rielly-Williams made two free-throws, Jamie Medley converted a three-point play , Khalila-O’Rielly-Williams hit a jumper and Seltzer hit her second trey to close out the 15-4 run with 2:54 to play in the game.
Holding the Wolves to zero percent from the free-throw line in the second half, Portland had a 85 to 50 percent shooting edge in the game. The Pilots also shot 32 percent from the field and handled Western Oregon on the boards, 46 to 29.
“We finally came out in the second half and played the way we know how to play,” said Head Coach Jim Sollars. “We played harder and with more intensity in the second half and I was happy with our play on the boards tonight. Ashlee Giles had a phenomenal stat line tonight. Amy Botto came off the bench and contributed big numbers for us. Overall, it was a total team effort and I am pleased with the win.”
Portland split its pair of exhibition games, falling to Seattle Pacific, 72-63, on Nov. 14. The Pilots open the regular season on the road on Fri., Nov. 22, facing Montana State at 7:00 p.m. in Bozeman, MT.
