Portland midfielder Alejandro Salazar was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, the third Portland player in the last four years to win the award. Head coach Clive Charles was named WCC Coach of the Year, his second such honor after receiving the award in 1988.
Salazar was also a first-team all-WCC pick, and Nate Jaqua earned his third first-team all-WCC award. Senior keeper Curtis Spiteri was a first-team pick for the first time after previously earning a second-team nod and two honorable mention awards.
Freshman defender Miguel Guante was Portland’s lone second-team selection, but six Pilots were honorable mention picks: junior midfielder Eric Cronkrite, senior midfielder Matthew Domingo, senior forward Sheldin Maistry, freshman defender Heath Pearce, junior midfielder Jarrod Weis, and junior defender Kyle Tanner.
The 10 all-conference picks from Portland is a program best, two more than Portland’s eight all-conference selections in 1995.
Salazar joins Andrew Gregor (1994), Steve Cherundolo (1997), Conor Casey (1999), and Jaqua (2000) as Portland’s WCC Freshman of the Year honorees.
