The University of Portland women’s basketball team dropped its season opener, 86-74 to the Montana State Bobcats on Friday night in Bozeman, MT. The Pilots drop to 0-1 on the season, while the Bobcats improve to 1-0 overall.
Portland had four players score in double-digits on the night. Senior Ashlee Giles led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from behind the arc and 3-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line. Teammates Whitney Grant, Hanna Seltzer and Amy Botto each tallied 10 points in the game. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams led the Pilots on the boards with eight, and Grant added seven rebounds in the effort. As a team, the Pilots shot 35 percent (20-of-57) from the field, 48 percent (10-of-21) from three-point range and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the charity stripe.
Isabel Stubbs led all scorers with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Stubbs shot 10-of-20 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. “We played really hard tonight, we just gave up too many points in transition,” said Head Coach Jim Sollars. “Khalila (O’Rielly-Williams) was in foul trouble and didn’t play a whole lot in the second half, that hurt us. We made some good improvements and we competed very hard for 35 minutes.”
