Missoula, MT - The University of Portland women's basketball team dropped its second game of the weekend, 74-65 to Montana on the road on Sun., Nov. 24. Portland falls to 0-2 overall, while the Lady Griz improve to 1-0 on the season.
Portland was without senior guard Ashlee Giles today and had three newcomers on the court for much of the game. Montana went into the break with a 40-32 lead. Portland came out shooting after the first half of play and went on an 8-0 run, tying the game at 40-40 with just under 17 minutes left in the game. Montana was able to pull down 22 offensive boards and out-rebounded the Pilots, 52-28. The Lady Griz scored 27 second-chance points off the Pilots and 22 points from its bench. Both teams made runs after the break, and the Lady Griz edged Portland, 34-33 in the second half, for a 74-65 final score.
Freshman Whitney Grant led the Pilots with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range and the free-throw line. Teammate Michaela Dalgleish racked up 19 points and shot 7-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams totaled 16 points and led the team with nine rebounds. For the game, Portland shot 40 percent (21-53) from the field, 46 percent (6-13) from behind the arc and 74 percent (17-23) from the free-throw line.
Hollie Tyler led the Lady Griz with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jody McLeod tallied 11 points, while Lynsey Monaco added 10 points. As a team, Montana shot 26-of-67 from the field, 5-of-23 from three-point range and 17-of-20 from the free-throw line.
