Christine Sinclair tied two NCAA tournament records Sunday, leading #8 Portland to a 4-0 third-round College Cup win over Richmond. Portland (17-4-2), advances to the quarterfinal round against top-seeded Stanford, Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
Sinclair had a hat-trick in the first half Saturday, tying 23 other players with three goals in an NCAA tournament game, then added an assist on Wanda Rozwadowska’s second-half goal to tie the NCAA tournament record with seven points in a game. Sinclair has 23 goals and three assists this season.
In eight career playoff games, Sinclair has scored 12 goals, just three short of Mia Hamm’s NCAA record of 15 goals over four years.
“We played very well. We’re playing at a different level right now, and I don’t know how much better I can ask the girls to play,” said Portland head coach Clive Charles. “Christine is a world-class striker, and we’re a more complete team with her on the field.”
Portland was overwhelming from the opening whistle, and outshot Richmond (14-6-2) 19-4 in the first half alone, 34-6 in the game. Sinclair opened Portland’s scoring in the 21st minute, running onto Erin Misaki’s short cross from the endline, and finishing the play with her left foot to the far post.
“They’re a wonderful team. I’m so impressed with Portland’s speed of play,” noted Richmond head coach, Peter Albright. “They’re totally unselfish and we were completely outclassed today.”
Less then three minutes later after the first goal, Lindsey Huie’s through ball at the top of the penalty area sprung Sinclair free, and the Canadian striker slotted an easy shot under Richmond’s on-rushing keeper.
Sinclair’s third goal, just five minutes after the second, was perhaps the finest of the season for Portland. Rozwadowska’s endline cross was headed by Huie back across the box to Sinclair, who easily finished past a scrambling Richmond defense.
“We know we’re in the playoffs and we need to focus on our play,” said Portland senior midfielder, Erin Misaki. “We’re so determined, and our intensity hasn’t dropped from the first minute.”
Rozwadowska completed Portland’s scoring in the 52nd minute off an assist from Sinclair. Sinclair had crossed the ball to her Canadian teammate on the left side of the box, and after settling the ball, Rozwadowska turned back to the middle and rifled a shot top shelf.
Richmond keeper Megan Cox was often spectacular in goal, making nine saves, including a trio of diving saves from Sinclair shots.
