The University of Portland women’s basketball team lit it up from three-point range tonight as they rolled to an 83-70 win over Pac-10 power Oregon State. The Pilots improve to 1-2 overall, while the Beavers drop to 1-1 on the season.
Portland’s game from behind the arc was impressive, almost tying a Chiles Center record on 10-of-19 shooting. The Pilots racked up 18 points of Beaver turnovers and 35 bench points. The Beavers out-rebounded Portland, 48 to 27, but OSU shot just six percent (1-of-16) from three-point range on the night.
Oregon State held the lead for all but forty seconds of the first half. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams converted a three-point play the old fashion way and put the Pilots up 30-28. A jumper by Oregon State’s Mandy Close would tie the game at 30-30 heading into the break.
After the break, Portland went on a 9-4 run with 16:04 left in regulation. The Pilots continued to hold the lead until the six minute mark when OSU’s Close hit a lay-up, taking a 62-61 lead. Portland went on an 11-0 run, hitting three-consecutive treys and took over the lead for good with just over a minute to play. The Pilots hit seven free-throws down the stretch to seal the deal, for an 83-70 win.
Hanna Seltzer came off the bench to lead all players with a career-best 17 points. Seltzer was 3-of-6 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, with a career-high two blocks. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams scored 14 points and led the team with seven boards on the night. Freshman Whitney Grant tallied 13 points, two assists and two steals, while teammates Michaela Dalgleish and Jaime Medley added nine points. Senior Ashlee Giles led all players with a season-high seven assists. As a team, the Pilots shot 48 percent (24-50) from the field, 53 percent (10-19) from three-point range and 63 percent (25-40) from the charity stripe.
“This win was a huge confidence builder heading into Sunday’s game with Tulane,” said Portland Head Coach Jim Sollars. “We had a long road trip last week, but the kids came back, practiced hard and they really played well tonight. I’m so proud of these kids. This will really help a young team grow and we feel really good about this win.”
Oregon State had three players score in double-digits on the night. Krystal Turner recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, along with three blocks. Leilani Estavan totaled 12 points and five assists, while Hollye Chapman chipped in 11 points and 11 boards. On the night, Oregon State shot 29-of-66 (44 percent) from the field, 1-of-16 (6.3 percent) from three-point range and 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the free-throw line.
“They were moving the ball well,” said OSU Head Coach Judy Spoelstra. “We were slow reacting. They nailed some big time shots.”
