San Francisco, CA - The University of Portland women's volleyball team dropped its second match of the weekend, 3-0 (32-30, 30-23, 30-23) to San Francisco on the road on Sat., Nov. 9. Portland falls to 14-12 overall, 3-8 in the WCC. The Dons improve to 6-21 on the season and 2-9 in WCC play.
The Pilots battled to three match points with San Francisco before the Dons picked up game one, 32-30. Game two went the Dons way, 30-23, as the Pilots struggled for points early on. After the break, Portland struggled for a comeback, but San Francisco’s momentum sealed the deal for a 30-23 win. The Dons out-hit Portland .316 to .174 and out-blocked the Pilots 12.5-4.0.
Portland’s Sara Vercruyssen recorded 15 kills for a .286 hitting percentage and six digs. Lauren Karpstein totaled nine kills and senior Anna Abatzoglou tallied seven kills and an impressive .417 hitting percentage. Setter Sheena Surplus posted 40 assists and 10 digs. Carlie Price added 13 digs in the effort.
Brittany Budinger led the Dons with 20 kills and a .421 on the night. Teammates Liz Macausland and Ashley Bello combined for 21 kills on the night. Kristina Bognar tallied 39 assists and 11 digs in the match.
UP NEXT: Portland will host Saint Mary’s College on Fri., Sept. 15 and San Diego on Sat., Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chiles Center in Portland, OR. The Pilots wrap-up WCC play at home on Sat., Nov. 23 with a single-match vs. Gonzaga at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Nov. 26, Portland hosts in-state rival Oregon State at 5:00 p.m. in the Chiles Center.
