The University of Portland women’s basketball team scored 27 points from turnovers en route to a 72-64 win over the Boise State Broncos on Mon., Dec. 16 at The Pavilion in Boise, ID. Portland improves to 3-4 on the season, while Boise State drops to 3-5 overall.
The Pilots shot a season best 9-of-11 (82 percent) from the free-throw line on the night and out-rebounded the Broncos, 34-31. Portland went 27-of-60 (45 percent) from the field and was an impressive 9-of-19 (47 percent) from behind the arc, while Boise State shot 48 percent (26-54) from the field, 37 percent (7-19) from three-point range and just 63 percent (5-8) from the charity stripe in the game. The Pilots racked up 30 points in the paint, 11 second-chance points and 17 points from its bench. The Broncos tallied 28 points in the paint, 10 second-chance points and just six points from its bench.
“I thought we played really hard tonight,” said Head Coach Jim Sollars. “We out-rebounded them by three tonight and that is huge for us. It made the difference in the game.”
Portland’s Hanna Seltzer led all players with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Seltzer also tallied three boards, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal in the game. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams notched 11 points and seven rebounds on the night, while teammates Whitney Grant and Ashlee Giles each totaled nine points. Giles also recorded seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
“We’re getting better each time we play,” said Sollars. “It was a total team effort tonight and I am very happy with the win.”
Boise State had three players score in double-figures on the night. Abby Vaughn and Mandy Welch combined for 30 points, while Jamie Hawkins added 14 points. Camille Woodfield led both teams with 11 rebounds.
