The University of Portland women’s basketball team scored 28 points from turnovers en route to a 73-64 win over the Pacific (CA) Tigers on Tues., Dec. 3 at the Chiles Center in Portland, OR. Portland improves to 2-3 on the season, while Pacific drops to 1-4 overall.
Portland held the lead throughout the game, and a late rally by the Tigers proved not enough. The Pilots kept their composure and hit some clutch free-throw down the stretch to seal the deal. Portland was edged on the boards, 41-31, but scored 14 fast break points and 19 points from its bench. Pacific managed just seven bench points and eight fast break points.
“I thought we played really hard tonight,” said Head Coach Jim Sollars. “Our bench put up some great numbers for us.”
Khailia O’Rielly-Williams led the Pilots with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and one steal in the game. Freshman Whitney Grant tallied 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Grant shot 4-of-8 from the field, 1-of-3 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Teammate Amy Botto came off the bench and racked up a career-best 14 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field, 1-of-2 from three-point range and was a perfect 1-of-1 from the free-throw line. Michaela Dalgleish added nine points and Hanna Seltzer notched seven points. As a team, Portland shot 26-of-58 (45 percent) from the field, 7-of-17 treys (41 percent) and 14-of-21 (67 percent) from the free-throw line.
“We played with more composure down the stretch and I am very happy with the win,” said Sollars. “We could just as easily have been 0-5, but we’re 2-3 and that says a lot about this team.”
Pacific’s Gillian d’Hondt led all players with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line. Teammate Andrea Nederostek totaled 16 points and nine boards, while Nancy Dinges chipped in 12 points and six rebounds. Pacific shot 44 percent (26-59) from the field, 21 percent (3-14) from behind the arc and 64 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe.
