The University of Portland women’s basketball team lost a 85-63 decision to the Oregon Ducks on Thurs., Dec. 5 in Eugene, OR. Portland moves to 2-4 on the season, while Oregon improves to 2-3 overall.
The Ducks led from the opening tip and physically out-manned the Pilots. Oregon scored 32 points in the paint and out-rebounded Portland, 56 to 31. The Pilots battled hard in the first half, but shot just 37 percent compared to Oregon’s 49 percent from the field. On the night, Portland made 23-of-64 (36 percent) from the field, 10-of-27 (37 percent) from behind the arc and managed just 7-of-17 (41 percent) from the charity stripe. Oregon went 31-of-70 (44 percent) from the field, 9-of-24 (38 percent) from three-point range and 14-of-24 (58 percent) from the free-throw line. The Ducks tallied 19 points off turnovers and 40 points from its bench.
“Oregon is a more well-rounded team this year,” said Head Coach Jim Sollars. “They took it to us inside and had a great game-plan.”
Michaela Dalgleish led the Pilots with 16 points, two assists and three steals. Dalgleish made 6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Jaime Medley came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range and 1-of-1 shooting from the free-throw line, along with five rebounds. Teammate Amy Botto racked up 12 points and four rebounds.
“Jamie had one of the best games of her career tonight and Amy Botto also put up some big numbers tonight,” said Sollars. “Tonight’s loss wasn’t because of a lack of effort, but rather a lack of execution down the stretch.”
Oregon saw four players score in double-figures on the night. Brandi Davis led all players with 19 points, 11 boards, four assists, two steals and one blocked shot in the game. Catherine Kraayeveld tallied 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Kayla Steen added 12 points.
