The Portland Pilots fell behind early 0-12 to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, but the Pilots fought their way back to win 62-59. The Pilots snapped a nine game road losing streak by winning their first game on the road since a December 6th victory over Oregon State.
The Bulldogs got off to a 12-0 lead with 12:35 left in the first half while the Pilots went 0-9 from the field. Da'Love Woods got the Pilots started with a jumper to get Portland on the board. The Pilots would fight all the way back led by Da'Love Woods' nine points on 4-6 shooting, including a last second 3-pointer to bring the Pilots within one, 28-29 at the break.
The Pilots got their first lead of the game with 13:49 left on another Woods jumper, 36-35. The Pilots would take a six point lead 49-43 with just under 10 minutes to go. The 'Zags would claw back and take the lead back going on a 9-0 run. That would give the Bulldogs a 52-49 lead the biggest lead either team would see until the final minute. The Pilots took the lead for good at 60-59 with just over a minute to go. A jumper by Woods with 30 seconds left finished the scoring for the two teams.
Da'Love Woods ended the night leading all scorers with 23 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Tami Standish added 21 points and eight rebounds for Portland. Hanna Seltzer added eight points for the Pilots.
The Bulldogs were led by Raeanna Jewell with 10 points and five rebounds. A trio of 'Zags finished the night with nine points, Jessica Malone, Anne Bickelhaupt and Melanie Tipps. Bickelhaupt fell one point short of a double-double after bringing in 11 rebounds.
The Pilots improved to 10-10 overall and 2-5 in West Coast Conference play. The Bulldogs dropped to 10-11 overall and 1-6 in WCC action. The two teams will play again on Sunday at Portland in the Chiles Center at 2:00 p.m.
