Pepperdine stayed unbeaten in West Coast Conference play with an 83-77 win Thursday at Portland, but had to come from behind for the victory. The Waves improved to 11-0 in WCC games, 18-6 overall. Portland dropped to 1-10 in WCC games, 5-20 overall with 12 losses of 10 points or less.
Casey Frandsen, coming off the bench for the first time this season, scored a game-high 28 points to lead Portland, while Ghislain Sema added 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Waves trailed 40-38 at halftime but ripped off a 16-5 run to start the second half, and eventually led 65-52 with 9:41 left in the game. Devin Montgomery and Jimmy Miggins, who each had 20 points to lead Pepperdine, scored 12 of the Waves’ 16 points in the run. Miggins added 15 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
After the Waves took a 73-63 lead with 5:02 remaining, Portland held Pepperdine scoreless for the next three minutes, closing within 73-69 after a pair of Frandsen free throws. The Waves responded with leads of eight, seven and six points, but Adam Quick hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, pulling Portland within 80-77.
Miggins then hit one free throw, but Patrick Galos grabbed the rebound when Miggins missed the second shot, drove the length of the floor and dribbled off his foot. Craig Lewis then went to the other end of the floor and knocked down a pair of free throws after being fouled.
Pepperdine - 21 of -27 at the free throw line in the game - was 8 of 10 in the final 1:05 of the game. The Waves out-rebounded Portland 44-37.
Portland was just 39.4% from the field, but hit 13-of-26 3-pointers and 12-of-15 free throws. Frandsen alone was 7-of-11 on 3-pointers, five coming in the first half.
