Adam Quick hit four free throws in the final 1:08 of overtime Saturday as Portland (6-20/2-10) beat Loyola Marymount 83-79, their first win in five overtime games this season. LMU dropped to 9-17, 2-10 in WCC games.
Casey Frandsen, again coming off the bench for Portland, had a game-high 25 points, while Coky Rochin added 17 points and 10 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the year. Kent Dennis had 21 points and Andy Osborn 13 for the Lions.
The Pilots fell behind 76-71 just 41 seconds into overtime, and 78-74 with 3:11 left, but a Coky Rochin layup brought the Pilots within 78-76 and 2:46 left. Andy Osborn then hit a free throw to put LMU up by three, but Eric Knight’s 3-pointer knotted the score at 79-79 with 2:06 left.
The Lions missed their final four shots from the field, while Quick knocked down four straight free throws to give Portland the game. Portland was a season-high 34-of-40 at the free throw line, and outrebounded a team for the first time in 13 games, 44-32.
Portland had lost 16 of its last 17 games and six straight prior to Saturday’s win, but somehow found a way to win despite 23 turnovers.
The Pilots trailed 70-63 with 4:07 remaining in regulation, and held LMU to just four points in the final 5:57, but needed four free throws from Ross Jorgusen and Frandsen to reach a tie with 1:41 left to play. Eric Knight, who had 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds, had a chance to win the game, but missed a pair of free throws with 1:08 to play.
Portland led 47-40 at halftime behind Frandsen’s 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
