Dan Dickau scored 24 of his game-high 39 points Saturday, leading #11 Gonzaga (20-3/7-1) to a 94-80 comeback win over Portland (5-17/1-7).
Dickau tied the Chiles Center record with eight 3-pointers, and was 12-of-18 from the field. His 39 points also tied his own career high. Zach Gourde added 14 points for the ‘Zags, and Alex Hernandez 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Casey Frandsen topped Portland with 29 points and six 3-pointers, Coky Rochin had his 14th double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Eric Knight had a career-high 18 points, and Patrick Galos added 10 points.
Gonzaga led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but Portland outscored the Bulldogs 15-7 over the last 5:44 to take a 48-46 halftime lead on Frandsen’s 3-pointer with nine seconds left.
Portland stood toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs over the first 8:26 of the second half, but the Bulldogs broke open a 61-60 lead with an 18-4 run over seven minutes, and emerged with a 79-64 lead with 5:12 left to play. Frandsen then scored 14 of his points in the final minutes, while Dickau answered with seven points and added two dunk assists.
Gonzaga shot 52.5% in the game and 65.5% from the free throw line, but committed 17 turnovers. The ‘Zags did most of their damage from the 3-point line, hitting 13-of-28 attempts - two off the Chiles Center record.
Portland was 11-of-34 on 3-pointers, but shot just 36.5% from the field. Gonzaga held a 42-37 rebounding edge.
