Saint Mary’s held Portland to just six second-half field goals Friday, running away with a 68-59 win over the Pilots in a possible battle for sixth place in the West Coast Conference.
Portland (6-22/2-11) had an eight point run to close the first half down just 37-34, and tied the game at 37-37 early in the second half, but Saint Mary’s (8-18/3-10) went on a 20-0 run to lead 57-37. An Adam Quick 3-pointer briefly halted the Gaels run, but Saint Mary’s held the advantage.
Casey Frandsen led Portland with 16 points, and extended his streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 28, though it didn’t come until 2:45 remained in the game. Coky Rochin added 12 points, and broke the Portland season free throw attempts record (209), hitting 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Rochin broke the former record of 207, set by Canaan Chatman in the 1994-95 season.
Ethnie Stubbs topped all scorers with 21 points off the bench, hitting 10 of 11 field goals. Ryan Nelson added 13 – also off the bench – and Chase Poole scored 10.
Portland was just 15 of 49 from the field in the game – 6 of 25 in the second half – but hit 86% at the free throw line. Saint Mary’s was above 50% from the field for much of the game, but finished at 48% (26-54).
The Pilots opened the game with leads of 10-0 and 14-2, but the Gaels ripped off a 16-point run to get back into the game, and eventually led 28-20 with 5:03 remaining in the half.
