The Portland Pilots defeated the Santa Clara Broncos by a score of 80-73. The Pilots were led by Khalila O’Rielly-Williams who scored 35 points, the ninth highest point total in school history, thirteenth best in West Coast Conference history and a new personal career high. O’Rielly-Williams also pulled down 12 rebounds to earn her fifth double-double of the season.
The first half was close throughout with each team taking no more than a four point lead. The Pilots down 39-38 with just under two minutes remaining rallied off a 5-0 run to close out the half on a 3-pointer by Trish Felts and a fastbreak lay-up by Khalila O’Rielly-Williams gave Portland a 43-39 halftime lead. O’Rielly-Williams had 17 points in the first half on 8-11 shooting. Tammy Annas led the Broncos with 11 points in the first half. Kendra Rhea nearly had a double-double in the first half alone with eight points and nine rebounds, she finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
The Pilots opened up a seven point lead to start off the second half, but the Broncos would work it down and take their own lead on a 3-pointer by Tami Annas to put Santa Clara on top 53-51 with 14:46 remaining. A pair of free throws by Trish Felts with 13:56 remaining would give the Pilots the lead for good at 56-55. The Pilots would move that lead all the way up to nine points on another pair of free throws this time by Da’Love Woods. Santa Clara would get within two points at 70-68, but two layups by O’Rielly-Williams would put the Pilots on top by six.
In scoring her 35 points, Khalila O’Rielly-Williams was 15-21 from the field. The 15 field goals sets a Chiles Center record for most field goals by a single player, breaking the previous record of 14 held by Toni Kent and Amy Claboe. Guard Da’Love Woods finished the night with 17 points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals. Trish Felts had a season high 14 points, including 4-7 from beyond the arc.
Leading the way for the Broncos was Tammy Annas who finished the night with 22 points. Julie Butler added 17 points for Santa Clara and Becki Ashbaugh finished with 11 points and nine assists.
The Pilots improve to 11-11 overall and 3-6 in West Coast Conference play with the victory. The Broncos fall to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in West Coast Conference action. The Pilots will host the University of San Diego Toreros on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the Chiles Center.
